Sony has announced $50 price rises for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and PlayStation 5 Pro that will go into effect within the U.S. tomorrow, August 21.

The base PS5 with a disc drive will rise in cost by $50 to $549.99, while the PS5 Digital Edition will similarly cost $50 more, at $499.99. The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, will rise $50 to $749.99.

"Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment," Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment's Vice President, Global Marketing said in a short statement shared today. "As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21."

The price rises come amid a turbulent time for global markets due to U.S. tariffs, and similar increases from other video games companies such as Nintendo, which recently increased the price of the original Nintendo Switch.

Sony previously raised the PS5's price in the UK and mainland Europe, Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, after already increasing the console's cost once before, back in 2022.

Earlier today, Microsoft raised eyebrows by declining to announce a price point for the ROG Xbox Ally X alongside its release date. Speaking to IGN, the device's manufacturer Asus said it needed more time to navigate the current "macro-economic" factors involved in deciding the gaming handheld's price.

No other changes were announced today by Sony for PlayStation 5 accessories, or for PS5 consoles in other markets.
