Sony has filed a patent for a piece of AI technology that would play games for you if you get stuck on a particularly tricky section.
The debate around AI and its place in gaming is seemingly endless, with many high-profile developers coming out in support or against its use. But no matter which side of the fence you sit, there’s no doubt that it’s only becoming more prominent.
In the last year alone, we’ve seen Arc Raiders come under scrutiny for its use of AI voicelines, while Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had its Indie Game Awards rescinded for using placeholder assets made using the technology.
Now, a patent from Sony has been discovered for a system that would let PlayStation games complete parts of themselves for you.
Sony patents AI tech that would help you complete games
The filing was originally made in September of 2024, but a World Intellectual Property Organization status report was published recently and was spotted by allaboutai.
According to the filing, Sony is working on the idea of using a “ghost” version of the player to assist them in games. This sounds like a more organic version of PS5’s Game Help feature, allowing the AI “overlay” to show you what to do, rather than reading a text prompt.
The feature consists of multiple potential modes: Story, Combat, Exploration, and Full Games. For example, Combat mode could show you the best way to defeat an enemy, highlighting key timings and attack patterns for you to replicate.
Meanwhile, Full Game mode would allow the ghost player to complete the section for you, so you can move on without getting bogged down for too long.
Explaining the thought process behind the system, the filing reads: “Games become very complicated, so players who are not experts oftentimes quit playing or find it hard to complete tasks. Players are able to do research for the game or even lookup prior gameplays on internet sites, but that process is time consuming and many times not very relevant to tasks and/or scenarios currently being encountered by the player.”
Of course, this doesn’t mean that it will definitely be introduced to PlayStation consoles going forward. Many companies file patents all the time for technology they’re working on to cover all bases, but that doesn’t guarantee that anything will come of it.
