Sony has filed a lawsuit against Tencent, accusing the Chinese gaming giant of copying its Horizon video game series in a new title.

Filed in a California federal court on July 28, the lawsuit claims Tencent’s unreleased game Light of Motiram is a “slavish clone” of Horizon. Sony alleges the game copies key elements from the franchise, including open-world mechanics, robotic creatures, character design, and its tribal-futuristic art style.

Tencent reportedly approached Sony to discuss licensing the Horizon IP, but was turned down. Months later, Tencent revealed Light of Motiram, and its design prompted Sony to take legal action.

Sony seeks to block release and destroy infringing material

In its complaint, Sony said multiple games journalists that compared Tencent’s project to Horizon, with one describing it as “Horizon Zero Originality.” The lawsuit argues that the similarities could mislead players into thinking the games are related.

Sony asked the court for an unspecified amount of money in damages and wants an order blocking Tencent from violating its intellectual property rights.
