Spider-Man: Brand New Day will mark the movie debut of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, but that poses a couple of problems – especially after Daredevil: Born Again.
Frank Castle hasn’t been seen on the big screen since 2008’s (underrated) Punisher: War Zone, coming after 2005’s (also underrated) The Punisher and the 1989 movie with Dolph Lundgren (which is just as bad as everyone says).
Next year, he’s joining forces with the wall-crawler (or fighting him; probably both) in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a movie that will also star Ruffalo’s Hulk and feature the long-awaited return of Michael Mando’s Scorpion.
It is incredibly exciting, but here’s the thing: how will the MCU make Punisher a formidable threat against Spider-Man (or the Hulk, for that matter), and what about the end of Daredevil: Born Again?
Will the Punisher be buffed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Ever since Bernthal’s casting was announced, there’s been a common fear: Brand New Day will give him all sorts of ridiculous technological enhancements and maybe even a new Hulkbuster suit so he stands a chance against the Hulk (and Spidey, if they go toe to toe).
According to insider Daniel Richtman, “the Punisher will still be a murderous psycho but will be equipped with tools to handle bigger threats, including a tank and advanced tech.”
The question is, how advanced? Will he be armed with extremely powerful weaponry but still resemble his character, or will be wearing the equivalent of a War Machine suit to even the odds against everyone else?
He is a street-level anti-hero who works best as a lo-fi character; guns, knives, and explosives, that’s all he needs. “I’m gonna be mad as hell if Punisher has crazy weapons in Spider-Man and then goes back to Daredevil weak ASF,” one user wrote.
“If he gets a Punisher Iron Man suit I promise on everything I love I’m getting up, walking out of the theater, and never speaking of the movie ever again,” another posted. “If he gets Iron Man tech at any point, I’m leaving the theater,” a third wrote.
Will Daredevil and Kingpin appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
At the end of Born Again Season 1, Kingpin outlaws vigilantes and keeps the Punisher in custody (in a cage underground), while Daredevil “builds an army” to fight Fisk and take back the city.
So… where does Brand New Day fit into that? Kingpin mentioned Spider-Man in Born Again, so he definitely knows about him, and surely the film can’t ignore such an enormous shift in New York?
Born Again Season 2 could be released first and tie up any loose ends before Brand New Day, but it’d still be frustrating if the movie didn’t acknowledge it in some way. Matt Murdock appeared in No Way Home, so Daredevil could feasibly show up, but Kingpin could be trickier due to the rights between his film and television appearances.
“I think I’m only usable for television series… it’s all caught up in rights and stuff,” Vincent D’Onofrio told Josh Horowitz.
“I don’t know when that would work out – or if it ever would work out at all, actually.”
Could he be bluffing, or will Brand New Day just ignore Daredevil: Born Again? “When does Brand New Day take place in the timeline though… or are they just gonna completely ignore him being in Daredevil?” one user asked.
“Okay but do the writers of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 know that Frank is in Brand New Day?” another wrote.
There is another possibility, as one fan has predicted: “So I’m guessing the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and The Punisher Special Presentation have to lead right into Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Maybe we’ll see a certain horned individual as well.”
