Production is underway on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and according to footage and photos from the set, the movie will introduce a fan-favorite villain.

Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man movie is one of the most anticipated Marvel movies, perhaps ever.

Here’s three good reasons: one, it’s being helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi; two, it’s expected to directly lead into Avengers: Doomsday; and three, No Way Home gave Peter Parker a clean slate, paving the way for a street-level story fans have always wanted.

In Kevin Feige’s words, that means he won’t be facing “world-ending events.” Instead, he’ll be battling New York City criminals – including one particularly formidable antagonist, if set photos are anything to go by.

Get ready for Mister Negative in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

An armored military vehicle has been snapped and recorded on the Spider-Man: Brand New Day set. At first glance, there doesn’t appear to be anything noteworthy – but look a little closer.

Fans have pointed out a logo of a red, demonic mask, and there’s a likely explanation: Spidey may go up against the Inner Demons, a criminal faction operating under Mister Negative.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will be driving this tank, and he earlier reported there will be a “big action scene with Punisher and Spider-Man fighting over a DODC convoy.”

How Mister Negative and the Inner Demons factor into this remains to be seen (and confirmed), but it would line up with earlier reports about the sequel. It’s been rumored that the Hulk will appear, with Mister Negative unleashing his full rage (something we haven’t seen in the MCU since 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok) and forcing Spider-Man to team up with The Punisher.

If you’re unfamiliar with the comics, firstly, you should play Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Secondly, he’s a supervillain who often poses as Martin Li, a generous philanthropist who helps fund F.E.A.S.T., a project dedicated to feeding the homeless.

As Mister Negative, he’s a ruthless crime lord who has control over the Darkforce and Lightforce; in short, he’s incredibly strong and can wield his energy for all sorts of purposes – good and very bad.

If he is going to appear in the film, we still don’t know who’ll play him. An earlier rumor claimed Steven Yeun was in talks for the role (remember, he was originally going to play Sentry, so maybe Marvel offered him Mister Negative when he had to step away), while the game’s voice actor Stephen Oyoung has expressed interest in bringing his portrayal to live-action.
