Sam Fisher will return. Splinter Cell: Deathwatch creator and showrunner Derek Kolstad exclusively revealed on the IGN Fan Fest: Fall Edition live stream Wednesday that the Netflix animated series has been greenlit for a second season.
“We've got a Season Two coming your way,” Kolstad announced. “We don't [have a release date yet]. And being new to animation, I know how long it takes. But we are fully into preproduction and everyone is super excited about where we go next.”
Given that Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 1 ends (no spoilers) fairly definitively for some key characters, Kolstad envisions Season 2 as offering “a larger-scale story” than the first season.
“What I love about those kinds of endings are when you return to it, usually we see one of three ways. One, you address it right away, two, you ignore it, or three, it's a hybrid approach, and here it's a hybrid approach,” said Kolstad. “And what I think you can see in Season Two is a larger-scale story, but [with the same] intimacy of character and the intimacy of action.”
“When you look at some of my favorite action movies like Die Hard With a Vengeance, a lot of stuff blows up and there's car chases and all that kind of stuff. But the greatest scene in that movie is when John McClane takes on the dirty cops in the elevator. It's close quartered, it's bloody, it's brutal, it's awesome, and we're going to have a lot of that [in Season 2].
And what about Sam Fisher’s good boy, Kaiju the dog, who was introduced in Season 1?
Kolstad, the creator of John Wick who infamously killed off that movie’s puppy, promised fans: “All I'll say about Kaiju is he will be safe forever.”
IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey is a fan of the new series, awarding the show an 8 out of 10 in his Splinter Cell: Deathwatch review:
“We don’t get a lot more time with Sam Fisher in this bloody good Splinter Cell animated series, but thanks to a great turn as Fisher by Liev Schreiber and a briskly paced plot with enjoyable characters, it’s time well-spent. If it were a book, it’d be a page-turner. The half-hour episodes fly by and then it’s over before you know it, but it’s time well spent with an older, grumpier version of our favorite secret-agent super-spy.”
All episodes of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch are now streaming on Netflix.
