Splitgate is making some major changes to its server, and the only reason it’s still alive is thanks to the Stop Killing Games movement.
It’s no secret that Splitgate hasn’t had the most successful few months after its sequel was released. The weeks following Splitgate 2 were met with plenty of player frustration, causing the devs to admit it “launched too early” and pull it back into beta for the foreseeable future.
As such, the first iteration has had to take the brunt of the playerbase, while the developers work on making Splitgate 2 great again. However, that also means the first game had to make some major changes, with the devs revealing it’s only actually alive thanks to Stop Killing Games.
Splitgate saved by Stop Killing Games in key server change
As revealed in a blog post on Steam, Splitgate will be getting some major changes, mostly to its servers. “Starting August 29, the original Splitgate will be moving to peer-to-peer as we focus our resources on rebuilding Splitgate 2. We know this game means the world to so many of you, and we’re not about to let that disappear. This means you’ll still be able to play matches and experience the magic that made Splitgate special, just in a different way,” explained the developers.
What this means is that instead of Splitgate having dedicated servers, players will open their own servers and run the game through those.
They continued to provide the reason why they chose to make this change: “You’ve invested time, energy, and passion into the original Splitgate, which deserves to be preserved… While we can’t keep the full online infrastructure running indefinitely, we can make sure the game itself lives on for anyone who wants to keep playing.”
They also referenced the Stop Killing Games movement as a reason why Splitgate is still active, saying, “We have seen a lot of conversations about the #StopKillingGames movement, and empathize with players who lose access to their favorite titles. We absolutely do not want our community to lose access to theirs.”
Stop Killing Games is a major movement in the industry right now, in which plenty of supporters are working to stop games from going offline. It seems Splitgate are one of the first to truly listen to this movement and make major changes to their game to ensure it doesn’t go offline while they work on the sequel.
What the future looks like for Splitgate now that players can create their own server is yet to be seen, but it’s clear the developer’s focus is on Splitgate 2 for now.
