SpongeBob SquarePants is the latest character to join Hatsune Miku and co. in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and yes, he does have a Krabby Patty-themed kart.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was one of the surprise announcements at this year’s Summer Game Fest, where it quickly drew attention thanks to its unique collection of characters. While Sonic and co. are still present, the blue blur takes a backseat as he’s no longer the main star.
Instead, Sega has taken a leaf out of Marvel’s iconic villain Thanos, collecting every popular character they can get their hands on like they were Infinity Stones. So far, the devs have revealed the Yakuza series’ Kasuga Ichiban, Persona 5’s Joker, and even collabed with the iconic virtual idol Hatsune Miku.
Well, Sega isn’t done there as now SpongeBob SquarePants will be joining the star-studded cast for some speedy races around Bikini Bottom.
SpongeBob joins Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds roster
On June 22, Sega uploaded a new trailer for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, giving fans a glimpse at SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom-themed race track. As we mentioned earlier, Nickelodeon’s sentient sea sponge comes kitted out with his very own Krabby Patty kart, while the race course features iconic locations from the show.
At one point, SpongeBob and his fellow racers can be seen smashing through the front doors of the Krusty Krab, while a dead-eyed Squidward taps away at the cash register. There’s even a mecha version of the series’ iconic villain, Plankton.
Players must avoid being crushed by his colossal fists and deadly eye lazer beam if they wish to make it to the field of ping, bouncy jellyfish. Patrick was also shown off near the end, so SpongeBob fans will be able to pick between the ditzy duo when embarking upon races.
That’s not all, as Sega also teased Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar as the next featured collab. We’ll likely hear more about this DLC before Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ September 25, 2025, release date.
