Squid Game Season 3 will be introducing plenty of new sinister games, and while most of them are being kept under wraps, we know that one will see the return of the Red Light, Green Light doll: Jump Rope.
Following the devastating events of the Season 2 finale, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the surviving characters are set to be put through the wringer once more in the third and final chapter of the Netflix series.
Of all the games that have led up to this point, Glass Bridge remains the most difficult (if you’re at the front of the queue, that is), Marbles was undeniably devastating, and Red Light, Green Light is the most iconic.
The Squid Game Season 2 post-credits scene teased the doll’s return, alongside her new “boyfriend” Cheol-su. At the time, a theory emerged that it would be a twisted take on Jack and Jill, but we now know the new Season 3 game is Jump Rope.
Squid Game Season 3 Jump Rope theory
The trailer shows players being knocked off a bridge by a giant jump rope, and numerous fan events have had live-action versions of the game to play. But some believe it won’t be this simple, with one theory suggesting it may be a sinister update on the Rope to Heaven tale.
Taking to the Netflix show’s subreddit, one explained, “The Rope to Heaven is a Korean folktale that explains the origins of the sun and moon. The story revolves around two siblings, Dalsun and Haesik, who face a terrifying tiger that devours their mother and then tries to eat them.
“The siblings climb a tree to escape, but the tiger begins cutting it down. In desperation, Dalsun prays for a rope to descend from heaven to save them. If their hearts are pure, the rope will be strong; if not, it will be weak.
“A sturdy rope appears, allowing them to ascend to the heavens. Haesik becomes the Sun God, and Dalsun becomes the Moon Goddess (which links to the background we see with Young-hee and Cheol-su).”
The Redditor explained that the idea would involve a “cloud ladder” (like a rope net) – some of which will be strong enough for players to swing on and some of which will not. There’s another clue: this would echo the drawings of players swinging on the dorm’s walls.
“I believe the dolls could tease players on the cloud ladder or rope net by forcing them to stop and hang mid-air for periods of time. Lights might turn off to simulate a night cycle, making it harder to see and wasting precious time for those still trying to cross,” they continued.
“The iconic Red Light, Green Light mechanic could adapt to this game, turning it into a timed challenge. I’d expect a timer of 15–20 minutes for the teams to complete the crossing.”
The Redditor pointed out that this would align with Glass Bridge, which involved a fair dose of luck. “If this theory holds, the Doll game may likely be the fifth and final one, mirroring the same sequence as in Season 1,” they said.
Scary idea, right? Many Squid Game fans agree, with one writing, “Very interesting theory. This would be terrifying as hell as a game.”
“This is genuinely so interesting and I could definitely see it happening! It would make a lot of sense,” added another. “I didn’t used to agree with the monkey bar / rope game theories but this actually has convinced me.”
A third simply wrote, “This show gives me so much anxiety… I love it.”
We don’t have long to wait to find out if this theory is true, as Squid Game Season 3 drops on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
