Squid Game Season 3 will mark the end of Netflix’s record-breaking show – but the story may not be completely over, according to one star.

Nobody expected Squid Game to be a worldwide phenomenon – especially the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who was so stressed about meeting people’s expectations during its production that he lost 10 teeth.

Tomorrow (June 27), Season 3 will drop on Netflix, seemingly closing the book on Gi-hun’s story; will he survive and make it out of the games, will the Front Man be redeemed, and will Kang No-eul find her daughter?

All of those questions will (hopefully) be answered, and going by one star’s comments, there may be more to come from the franchise.

Squid Game Season 3 finale could set up a new spinoff

During a press conference Dexerto attended, Lee Byung-hun (who plays the Front Man) was asked to describe the finale in three words.

“Climax… conclusion… new start,” he teased. “It’s a dual-meaning.”

As for what that means, there are loads of possibilities. There were hints of redemption for the Front Man in Season 2; he seemed to really respect Gi-hun and his devotion to other players, so perhaps his views on people (or “trash” as he’s called them before) have changed.

It could also have implications for other characters in the show. All of the players have big plans; for example, Cho Hyun-ju wants the money to pay for her gender-affirming surgery. Of course, there will be plenty of deaths in Season 3, but “new start” suggests some people will make it out alive.

There could be another “new start” too: an American version of Squid Game has been in development at Netflix for a long time, with David Fincher set to direct it. What if the finale sets this up in some way?

“Director Hwang keeps saying it’s a finale, but when I first read it, I felt it could be a finale… at the same time, it could be a new start,” Lee continued.

“I’m not sure about that, it’s my personal opinion.  But if the audience’s love and support increase, we’ll never know what happens.”
