Squid Game: The Challenge is back for Season 2, during which twin contestants Jacob and Raul Gibson believed they knew what to expect, but their preparation proved to be pointless.
Squid Game took the world by storm when it launched on Netflix, and the deadly drama quickly spawned a real-life gameshow titled Squid Game: The Challenge.
Like its predecessors, members of the general public participate in a series of games. Unlike the original, they don’t die if they fail – rather, they are simply eliminated and sent home.
As this is the second season, some contestants trained in advance, believing they could predict which challenges would return, but their plan did not pay off. Warning: SPOILERS ahead…
Squid Game: The Challenge contestants trained for a game that isn’t in Season 2
Red Light, Green Light is probably the most famous challenge in both Squid Game and Squid Game: The Challenge.
Based on a popular children’s game, the TV version sees contestants endeavouring to traverse an enclosed space while being watched by a giant robot doll. When the doll says “green light” they can move forward, but when she shouts “red light” they have to stop and remain stationary while the doll watches for movement, which results in elimination.
Twin brothers Jacob and Raul Gibson – aka Players 431 and 432 – believed that the game would kick off Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2, but instead, proceedings commenced with an entirely new game called The Count.
“Because in Season 1, they entered in Red Light, Green Light, I assumed that it was going to be Red Light, Green Light as well, because it’s such a big game,” Raul told the Radio Times.
“So entering the room was a bit of a throw off and then obviously, the first game, the test, that was quite intense, really intense. So yeah, it was definitely not what we were expecting. But I think it was just made us really just focus on what was happening at the time.”
Jacob added that they trained for Red Light, Green Light so much that they didn’t consume food or water in advance, so “we just really prepared and it wasn’t that so it was just a bit like [we] wasted loads.”
What happened to Jacob and Raul?
Jacob and Raul made it thought the first round in Squid Game: The Challenge – Raul by the skin of his teeth – but they were both ultimately eliminated by Game 3.
The twins volunteered for the first game in Season 2, not realizing they would be team captains pitted against each other.
Jacob’s team won, meaning he went through to the next round. Raul team’s lost, meaning they were all eliminated, but he was given a lifeline for volunteering to be captain in the first place. So Raul secretly eliminated three fellow players during the first dorm test in order to stay in the contest.
But there was a target on their back by this point, meaning Raul was eliminated during a Russian doll test when he received less votes than his opponent, while Jacob went out during Game 3, Mingle.
