Cozy farming sim Stardew Valley has finally become the top-rated game on Steam, surpassing Valve’s own Portal 2 in the process.
It has been almost ten years since Stardew Valley was first released, and yet the game is still holding strong with a massive following and active community. If anything, the cozy farming sim is now more popular today than it ever has been.
Over the years, solo developer ConcernedApe has rolled out plenty of updates that have given the game even more depth and plenty of reason for fans to keep playing, in addition to features such as new NPCs, multiplayer functionality, and more.
Now, as of July 2025, the title known for its cozy and relaxing gameplay has hit another huge milestone. Stardew has now surpassed Valve’s classic, Portal 2, as the highest-rated game on Steam.
Stardew Valley hits huge milestone by dethroning Portal 2
First released in 2011, many consider Portal 2 a classic thanks to its mechanics, puzzles, sense of humor, and unique visuals. With an overall positive reception, the iconic title from Valve became the top-rated game on Steam not long after launch and held the spot for a whopping 14 years.
After holding out for a decade and a half, Stardew Valley has now taken the crown, with a score of 8.87 and a total of 899,309 votes, according to stats from Steam250.
Although Portal 2 is now the second-highest-rated game, it’s not too far behind. It only has a slim 0.02 rating gap, with a score of 8.85, though with half the votes at 436,510.
Meanwhile, in the third spot and below, familiar titles such as Terraria, People Playground, Left 4 Dead 2, and even the drug-dealing game Schedule 1, are all included in the list’s Top 10.
Given this data all stems from user reviews, the list of the top 250 games on Steam is always in flux. We’ll just have to wait and see if Stardew can hold onto the top spot for long.
