Stephen King revealed which disturbing scene in It: Welcome to Derry has stuck in his mind, which is high praise for the prequel series from the master of horror.
The prequel takes place in 1962, 27 years before the events of 2017’s IT, and follows Pennywise’s previous reign of terror during the height of the Cold War. Our review says the show “widens the story of the titular town (and clown), alongside the brutal uncompromising violence it inflicts on the entire cast.”
The show has been a solid hit with fans, with many coming up with theories about deadly historical events that are only mentioned in passing in King’s original book.
The writer himself recently gave the show his seal of approval in a new interview, and revealed the disgusting scene that he can’t stop thinking about.
Stephen King can’t stop thinking about the pickle jar scene in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2
The pickle jar scene in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 is the one that has made a lasting impact on King, which is pretty impressive since it doesn’t involve Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard).
“I like Welcome to Derry a lot,” King told the New York Post. “There are plenty of horrors and lots of surreal visuals. There’s a supermarket scare that sticks in my mind, complete with pickle jars.”
“Andy Muschietti has got a touch of genius when it comes to scares,” he continued. “Folks are going to see some scenes in their nightmares.”
The scene in question follows Lily (Clara Stack) as she wanders around the supermarket, before the shelves start to close in around her and the other customers have creepy smiles on their faces in the background. It isn’t long before she’s trapped by rows and rows of pickle jars that have her dead father’s remains in them, and she’s attacked by pickled tentacles and rotting flesh. Yummy.
Lily’s father was killed in a grisly accident at a factory before the events of the show, and the young girl blames herself for his death. She visited him at work, but accidentally left her ring inside the factory. When her father went back in to get it, he quickly tried to fix a malfunctioning machine but was dragged inside it and horrifically ripped to shreds.
The pickle scene in Episode 2 is Pennywise’s way of exploiting Lily’s fear, the very thing that he feeds on just as much as actual flesh and bones. So it’s no wonder that King liked the disgusting sequence, because there’s more to it than just a simple scare.
