The first five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 have dropped, and the footage answers a burning question that fans have been asking since Season 1.
We’re in the Stranger Things endgame now, with Part 1 of the climactic Season 5 dropping later this month, and the finale hitting in December.
Yesterday was ‘Stranger Things Day’ – designed to commemorate Will Byers being kidnapped on November 6, 1983, which was the inciting incident that kicked the sci-fi series off.
As part of the celebrations, Netflix dropped the first five minutes of Season 5 online, which depicted exactly what happened to poor Will after his disappearance…
Vecna was controlling Will from the start
The footage begins with Will singing some Clash while bedding down in ‘Castle Byers’ in the Upside Down. But his tune is interrupted by a Demogorgon, which Will shoots in the face.
That has little effect, and the monster chases Byers up a tree, from which he falls and loses consciousness. Which isn’t ideal as the creature then drags the boy to a lair that belongs to… Vecna.
“At long last we can begin,” says the show’s overarching villain, as a tentacle attaches to Will’s mouth. “We are going to do such beautiful things together, William. Such beautiful things.”
So now we know that Vecna has been inside Will’s head from the very beginning of proceedings, which confirms a long-running fan theory that’s set Reddit aflame.
“The implications of this are that the mindflayer part inside Will was part there intentionally right?” asked one Redditor, to which another responded, “I think that’s the biggest takeaway from it, yeah.
“We’ve always known he had been flayed and was (fully) activated at a later time because it would make sense for it to have happened when he was in the Upside Down. What’s really new and it’s something people had only guessed at but now it’s confirmed is that Will was targeted by Vecna from the beginning.”
The footage has also inspired new questions, with one fan writing: “I wonder what the purpose of possessing Will is. It seems like Demogorgons might be trying to kidnap kids in Season 5, like Will. I’m curious what the purpose is.”
Another added: “I’m looking forward to answers, but my question is why Vecna would create spies but not return them to the real world himself. Looks like Vecna somehow knew that Will would be rescued. Why not do the gross tube thing and then throw them back home? Looks like they get sick the more time they stay in the Upside Down and could end up rotting like Barb.”
There’s also respect for how the sequence reframes previous scenes: “I rewatch this damn show like 3+ times per year, when Joyce and Hopper find Will like that it always gets me. The fact that it was Vecna has me shook. This is gonna be incredible.”
Some have even more respect for Will now: “He was brave asf though. Imagine seeing that monster CLIMBING after you and then you jump to another tree. So brave. So sad, it looks like evil Will is canon.” While another corrected that claim to “possessed Will.”
There’s also love for the what the footage sets in motion: “It was always Vecna from the start. This season is going to be incredible. I just know it.”
And also hope that Will makes it to the end: “I hope Will survives season 5. He has been through enough.”
