The end is near: the first trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 has just dropped, and Vecna has a new, terrifying design for the final chapter of the show.

After the Demogorgon and Mind Flayer, Vecna was introduced in Season 4 as Stranger Things’ scariest and most dangerous villain yet. Formerly 001, Dr Brenner’s first subject, he was banished to the Upside Down by Eleven, where he transformed into a disgusting, murderous monster.

By the end of the fourth season, he nearly killed Max, and he wreaked destructive havoc across Hawkins.

In Season 5, according to Netflix, “our heroes are united by a single goal: to find and kill Vecna.”

Vecna returns in Stranger Things Season 5 teaser trailer

We only get a sneak peek of Vecna in the Stranger Things Season 5 trailer, showing up at the 2:09 mark before appearing to deflect (or inflict) a fiery blast. “Found you,” he says in his gravely, haunting voice.

The new series will pick up in the fall of 1987. “Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts… but [Vecna] has vanished,” the synopsis reads.

“Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding.

“As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming – and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone – the full party – standing together, one last time.”

There are plenty of other teases in the trailer. It opens with the group “commencing a burn”, but it’s unclear what they’re burning or why. We see Eddie Munson’s grave vandalized with “Burn in hell” painted over it. Max appears to still be in a coma, and it’s unclear if she’ll wake up by the end of the show.

Notably, there’s a glimpse of Linda Hamilton’s character (believed to be called Dr Kay), Nancy crying (is Steve finally a goner?), and Hopper and Eleven teaming up.
