Stranger Things might be over, but the show’s stars are still fielding questions about ‘Conformity Gate,’ with star Caleb McLaughlin recently sharing his thoughts on the fan theory.

Stranger Things might have concluded at the turn of the year, but that hasn’t stopped fans speculating about the existence of an alternate ending.

The ‘Conformity Gate‘ theory posited that the show’s epilogue was an illusion created by Vecna, and that the real finale would drop on January 7.

That didn’t happen because Conformity Gate was nonsense, and Lucas actor Caleb McLaughlin is now having his say on the fan-made controversy.

Caleb McLaughlin thought Stranger Things ‘Conformity Gate’ theory was “dumb”

“At first, I thought the ‘Conformity Gate’ theory was dumb,” McLaughlin told The Hollywood Reporter. “I get that people want to live in this optimistic place of, ‘Oh, we want more Stranger Things,’ but the show is done, guys. I was like, ‘Guys, it’s over. It’s been 10 years. We were full-on kids and now we’re full-on adults, and we don’t need any more of us.’

“The Duffers – our wonderful, amazing creators – wanted to leave everybody with this level of optimism that the show has always given everyone. So if they left the show without that, we would have left Stranger Things without the true essence of what we’ve been representing forever.”

McLaughlin added that the show concluded in the place it should, which is where it began.

“We started off Season 1 playing Dungeons & Dragons, and we ended just like that,” he explained. “Mike’s storytelling and writing ability is how the show should have ended.

“I think people missed the concept of what the show is when they were like ‘Oh, there’s going to be more.’ No, that’s just Mike’s imagination. That’s who he’s always been, even in Season 1. It’s all just storytelling.”

How Stranger Things SNL spoof came about

Soon after the finale dropped, Mike actor Finn Wolfhard hosted Saturday Night Live, and appeared in a sketch spoofing the Conformity Gate theory.

He convinced McLaughlin – as well as Dustin actor Gaten Matarazzo – to join him, and Caleb has been explaining how it happened: “Finn reached out and said, ‘Can you come in the day before the show?’ And I was like, ‘Sure.’

“I was going to fly out to see his SNL episode regardless because he asked all of us to come and support him, but they asked me to fly out earlier so that I could be a part of the segment. So I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m down. Just let me know what I need to do.'”
