The Supergirl hype train is starting to build some steam, and if rumors about a new trailer debuting during this weekend’s Puppy Bowl are correct, it indicates what the movie will be about.

Supergirl is the second film in James Gunn’s re-imagined DC Universe, following his well-received take on Superman.

Gunn is on producing duties for this one, with Craig Gillespie directing from a script by Ana Nogueira, which in turn is based on the Woman of Tomorrow comic.

And if the new trailer is premiering during the Puppy Bowl rather than the Super Bowl, there’s a strong chance one specific storyline will be carried over. Potential SPOILERS ahead…

Krypto might be in trouble if Supergirl Puppy Bowl rumor proves true

It’s not yet clear exactly how much of Tom King’s World of Tomorrow plot will make it into Supergirl. Judging from the early footage released, there are obvious elements being used, including Krem of the Yellow Hills being the villain (though looking quite differen), and Ruthye Marye Knoll the young woman teaming with Kara to hunt him down.

But James Gunn has been clear that the film won’t be a direct adaptation, telling Variety that: “It’s a space fantasy, which is like Guardians [of the Galaxy] in a way, but it’s based on the Tom King book. It doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there.”

Earlier this week that same outlet reported that “DC Studios will tease Supergirl during the Puppy Bowl, which is airing on Animal Planet.” Which is a strange choice when millions more eyes will be on the Super Bowl.

Variety puts that down to synergy, pointing out that Animal Planet is a network that’s owned by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery.

But the Bowl choice could also be consistent with what Supergirl is about, which is very likely Kara Zor-El’s love for her dog. As while the central Woman of Tomorrow plot sees Ruthye stalking Krem to avenge her father’s death, Kara also has her reasons.

That’s because during an attack on Supergirl, Krem mortally wounds her beloved pet pooch Krypto. Though she isn’t on a revenge mission – rather Kara’s after a sample of the poison that took down Krypto, as it might be able to save the doomed doggie.

The first Supergirl trailer featured the super-powered canine, but aside from a moment where he could be lying unconscious or just sleeping – pictured above – there’s no sign of his grave injury, or that driving the story forward.

But if it proves to be Supergirl’s inciting incident, Sunday’s Puppy Bowl is the perfect place to drop that reveal, and get all those dog-lovers purchasing tickets to see Krypto saved.
