Supergirl hits screens this summer based on Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow, and if it features a specific storyline from the comic, the next DC movie will rule.

Following the success of Superman last summer, we’re nearing the release of the second film in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, with Supergirl swooping onto screens in June.

Milly Alcock’s take on the character briefly appeared in Superman to collect her pet pooch Krypto, a canine character who might be central to the new movie’s inciting incident.

But if the film strictly adhere’s to the comic’s storyline, Supergirl will feature a spectacular sequence unlike any yet seen in a superhero movie. Potential SPOILERS ahead…

Supergirl could feature giant alien dinosaurs

While early trailer footage suggests Supergirl is using the World of Tomorrow plot, producer James Gunn intimated that the film won’t be a direct adaptation, telling Variety: “It’s a space fantasy, which is like Guardians [of the Galaxy] in a way, but it’s based on the Tom King book. It doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there.”

It looks like Kara Zor-El is still teaming up with Ruthye Marye Knoll to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hills. But at present it isn’t clear if the film will adapt Chapter 5 of the graphic novel, titled ‘The Lake, the Trees, and the Monsters.’

But we’re very much hoping it does, as that chapter is an action-packed section of the story, that sees Supergirl stuck on a wildly dangerous planet, with monsters aplenty, and little chance of survival.

Introducing the horrors of Barenton

They end up there due to Krem’s use of a ‘Mordru Globe,’ a magical sphere that can “transport the most powerful beings in the universe billions of miles from their intended destination.”

It’s a planet called ‘Barenton,’ which was built to bring Superman down by being filled with monsters, and possessing a green sun that saps his powers.

That happens to Supergirl when said sun rises, meaning the dynamic duo have to survive 10 hours on Barenton until that sun sets, and her powers return.

The chapter kicks off with Kara rescuing Ruthye from underneath the foot of a creature that’s big. Really big. Like Godzilla and King Kong big.

We obviously saw Superman fight a Kaiju in last summer’s movie, but that was in Metropolis, making it look like countless other superhero and monsters movies from the recent past.

What sets the Woman of Tomorrow sequences apart is they play out on a desolate planet with unforgiving terrain – illuminated in hues of yellow, orange, and green by artist Bilquis Evely and colorist Matheus Lopes – which looks gorgeous on the page, and have the potential to appear equally gorgeous onscreen.

The monsters in question also look somewhat prehistoric, with beasts akin to Pterodactyls, Velociraptors, and a T-Rex all attacking, meaning we’re essentially getting Supergirl vs Dinosaurs.

Though it’s also a sequence where Ruthye steps up and plays her part, due to that sun putting Kara out of action. But when it sets, all bets are off, with the chapter concluding in truly spectacular fashion.

It’s a sequence that demands to be adapted in movie form, and seen on the biggest of screens, so here’s hoping Supergirl’s planet-hopping adventure takes her to Barenton this summer.
