James Gunn’s Superman has arrived on digital, and fans have quickly found a hidden, potential change to the movie’s most shocking twist.

At the start of the movie, Clark watches a message from his Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara. “We have searched the universe for a home where you can do the most good, and live out Krypton’s truth, that place is Earth,” they tell him in the recording.

Throughout his whole life, Clark assumed he was sent to Earth to serve mankind. However, halfway through the film, Lex releases the full, seemingly recovered message to the world – and it turns out they wanted him to conquer the planet.

It remains one of Superman’s most contentious moments, and despite everyone’s theories, Gunn appeared to insist that the message was real. But what if it wasn’t?

Superman small text may change Jor-El and Lara twist

Near the end of the film, following Lex being outed as a “traitor”, there’s a clip of Maxwell Lord on the news saying that Lex “sucks.”

However, there’s something else on-screen at that moment that nobody noticed until now. Under “Maxwell Lord Speaks Out”, text on the screen says, “The Daily Planet shows Luthor was behind the false images of Superman’s parents’ message.”

Remember, in the message, his Kryptonian mom and dad tell him, “The people there are simple, and profoundly confused. Weak of mind and spirit and body.

“Lord over the planet as the last son of Krypton. Dispatch of anyone unwilling or unable to serve you, Kal-El. Take as many wives as you can so your genes and Krypton’s might and legacy will live on in this new frontier. Do us proud, our beloved son. Rule without mercy.”

If the message was fake, it’s an unexpected retcon that could have rippling effects down the line. The movie ends with Clark watching clips of Pa and Ma Kent instead of Jor-El and Lara, fully embracing his childhood with his ‘true’ parents and seeing himself as human.

You may be tempted to point out what Gunn said during his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “In the movie, Mr. Terrific says, ‘I know those computer forensics guys. There’s no way.’ That’s Mr. Terrific. Smart as Lex Luthor,” he explains.

“Then I have my Secretary of Defense say, ‘Think whatever you think about Luthor, but it’s real.’ And then the clincher is that Gurkos and Lex are walking together, and you know, Gurkos says, ‘Ah, you doctored the message. This is great.’ And Lex says, ‘It’s not a message.’ You know, ‘It’s not doctored. It’s real.'”

Maybe it is real and The Daily Planet has misassumed the extent of Luthor’s plotting against Superman, but Gunn’s wording is curiously non-declarative – he never says, “The message is real”, he just reiterates and repeats what other characters said.
