If you’ve watched the Superman trailer, you’ll have noticed our hero holding a tiny green infant in his hand. His name’s Baby Joey – and the new movie’s merch has given away his backstory.
There is no doubt that Superman is going to be this summer’s breakout blockbuster… all you need to do is look around you. Early access screenings have been snapped up, ticket sites have crashed in pre-sales, and there’s more popcorn buckets than we know what to do with.
Hype and rumors have been swirling around DC’s reintroduction for months (arguably, years), so it’s no surprise that with one scroll of a social media platform, you’ll see a bunch of alleged leaks.
With Warner Bros. now dropping a ton of new merch, you might have noticed Baby Joey has a much bigger link to the DCU than first thought – and this leak seems legit. Warning: spoilers ahead!
Superman children’s book gives away huge Baby Joey spoiler
Children’s book Superman’s Friends and Foes, part of the merch tying into the new film’s release, confirms in its description that Baby Joey is “Metamorpho’s toddler son. When Joey is taken, Metamorpho must choose between working with Superman or Lex Luthor.”
On top of that, we know a collection of dolls is also about to be released. They include Superman (David Corenswet), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho, Lex Luthor, Krypto, and Baby Joey. In a nutshell, the logic checks out.
If you’re a fan of DC comics – particularly the Justice League ones – you’ll have probably seen this one coming. Though he was only referred to as Joseph, Metamorpho was set up to have a shining green little one, though he wasn’t seen properly. Little is known about him other than this.
Not only does this all confirm Joey is exactly who we see in that trailer clip, but it tracks with a previous rumor flying around the internet – Luthor kidnaps the boy to use as leverage against Metamorpho, who is forced to keep the Man of Steel prisoner by transforming his body into Kryptonite.
We still don’t completely know how Metamorpho is going to tie into Gunn’s take on the story, but the book suggests he will definitely be sticking around. We’ve seen his incredibly creepy face in previews, but it doesn’t seem like he’s directly tied to the Justice Gang.
Instead, popular theories include our Kypronite hostage situation above, not being the face we’re led to believe is his but instead fans see his transformation story, and the reveal he’s actually working for Stagg.
Now, we’ve just got to add “being a dad to a mutant newborn” to his growing list.
