Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s definitely Superman, and he’s hovering above the tallest building in London as part of a “record-breaking” publicity stunt for the new movie.
James Gunn’s DCU is about to kick off, and the film’s promotional efforts are already pulling out all of the stops. David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) have been active on TikTok together, and they’re currently traveling the world on a huge press tour.
Now, an enormous, “record-breaking 11ft sculpture” of Superman has been spotted flying above The Shard, the tallest skyscraper in London.
“London! Look up,” Gunn tweeted, sharing incredible photos of the hero suspended within the building’s spire.
“Mind-blowing” Superman model took 2,000 hours to make
The Superman model is over 300 meters in the air, and according to The Shard, it’s visible from up to 40 miles away. If you’re lucky, you may even catch the Daily Planet helicopters circling him.
“To see such a realistic depiction of our Superman displayed on the top of The Shard is mind-blowing,” Gunn said (via London World).
The model was an enormous undertaking, made using 3D scans of Corenswet and “in close consultation” with the filmmakers. As you’d expect, the Man of Steel was built with… steel; specifically, a welded steel framework with “a fiberglass bod molded in ECO resin, supported by galvanised steel cables” holding it in place above the building.
In total, the sculpture took four months and over 2,000 man-hours, with more than 20 people collaborating on bringing the 120kg model to life. It was set in position this morning (July 1), with the team banding together to hoist Superman into place.
“Superman has stood as a symbol of hope and heroism for generations, so it feels only fitting that he now watches over London from the top of one of its most iconic landmarks,” Daniel Fulbrook, head of Marketing for REM, asset manager of The Shard, said.
“To see him suspended within The Shard’s spire is truly surreal. We’re incredibly proud to help bring this legendary figure to life in such a bold and breathtaking way.”
