James Gunn’s time in the DC universe doesn’t end with Superman, as Justice League is officially “in the back of his mind.” But will David Corenswet’s hero be a part of it?

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves – our new and improved Superman hasn’t even had his solo outing yet. The new movie drops on July 11, 2025, exploring Clark Kent aka Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive human family in Smallville, Kansas.

Hype has been brewing for it since the start of the year (and even before that, if we’re being honest), with early ticket pre-sales already crashing the internet – though if you know where to look, you might be eligible for an even earlier screening.

Where Supe’s future goes after is still a mystery, though Gunn is definitely cooking new things up behind the scenes. One of those is likely to be Justice League, but what will it look like, and will Corenswet return?

James Gunn’s Justice League “awesome” for David Corenswet’s Superman

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly of potential Justice League plans, Corenswet said, “I mean, that sounds awesome. I don’t take it upon myself to think ahead in that kind of way, just because one would hate to get one’s hopes up about anything in particular and then have it go in another direction.

“What I like to do is stay blissfully ignorant, and then when James tells me what’s going to happen, I get to have a wonderful surprise. So if Justice League is in the back of his mind, that sounds great to me. I’ll put it at the back of my mind and we’ll see what happens.”

Don’t panic though – Gunn has basically confirmed Justice League will be happening, it’s just a question of when. “Of course, of course,” he responds when asked about the team-up. “But there is no Justice League in this world… not yet,” replying a curt “sure” to a question concerning larger plans for the DCU.

While there are no concrete details yet, we can assume Gunn’s take will look vastly different from the version of Justice League we saw back in 2017. According to the comics, Green Lantern, the Flash, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter are all team members. Cyborg and Shazam were also featured in the Prime Earth version.

With a Wonder Woman movie also confirmed, it’s likely a brand-new cast would join Corenswet rather than the likes of Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa making a return. While casting hasn’t happened yet, Adria Arjona is currently the fan favorite to play Wonder Woman.

We’re also likely to see Supergirl included in some form, with Gunn confirming she makes up one of the four most important characters for his vision of the franchise (with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman being the others). However, what is less clear is whether Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman would return for Justice League, with The Batman 2 still over two years away from release.
