The Man of Steel wears trunks over tights in the new Superman movie, and director James Gunn and star David Corenswet have revealed the reason for that sartorial decision.
To trunk or not to trunk – that is the question which faces every director of a Superman movie. The iconic DC character is already wearing bright blue tights, so do you complement that looks with little red swimming trunks, as in the comics? Or does live-action Superman require something a little less ridiculous?
Christopher Reeve went with the trunks and looked, well, super, while Brandon Routh did the same with similar results. But Henry Cavill did not, his Man of Steel remaining resolutely blue down there.
James Gunn and David Corenswet debated the issue during pre-production on the new movie, with the director even consulting one of his predecessors on the matter. But the film’s star ultimately came up with a reason for the trunks that satisfied everyone.
How David Corenswet solved Superman’s trunk problem
In an interview with Fandango about the new Superman movie – which can be viewed above – James Gunn says: “One of the biggest questions was were we going to have trunks or not have trunks? I talked to [Man of Steel director] Zack Snyder who was like ‘I tried a billion different versions with the trunks and at the end of the day I tried it but I just couldn’t get there.’
“I was feeling exactly the same way, and [Costume Designer] Judianna [Makovsky] and I talked and she said ‘Alright, we’ll do one version where we try both trunks and no trunks.’ I went in with David and he tried it not trunks and trunks. And I still was going to go with not trunks.”
But Gunn still wanted the comic book look, because that was the Superman he grew up with. He just needed a logical or practical reason.
“The problem is they look kind-of silly,” says Corenswet. “You were looking for a way to make them look cool. Or you were looking for a function, or an explanation for having them that would justify them. And my thing was just maybe they’re supposed to look a little silly. Maybe the reason he wears them is to look a little silly. Basically to undermine how powerful he really is.”
Gunn concurs, stating that “in this version of the DCU, everyone knows he’s an alien. He shoots beams out of his eyes. He can blow things down with his breath. He’s sort-of this terrifying creature… but he really likes kids and human beings and people, and he wants kids not to be afraid of him. And so that was the thing that made me decide to keep the trunks.”
