James Gunn’s Superman is about to fly into cinemas, but if you want to wait to watch it on streaming, it’s guaranteed to land on one platform before any other.

Superman may not end up being the highest-grossing movie of 2025 (or perhaps it will, who knows?), but it’s arguably one of the biggest films of the year – if only for what it represents.

This is the first big-screen introduction of a new Superman since 2012’s Man of Steel, and with the DCEU officially dead and buried, it marks the beginning of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.

It’s already off to a strong start on Rotten Tomatoes, so expect seats to be snapped up in the coming days – and if you want to stream it, you’ll need to wait for one platform.

How to watch Superman

Superman will be available exclusively in cinemas worldwide from July 11.

It’s been filmed for IMAX, so while it’s screening in all available formats (including 3D and 4DX), you should see it on the biggest screen possible.

“I thought that there’s something about Superman, this beautiful and colorful figure being able to fly… and to put that on film, it seemed like the perfect place to experience that would be IMAX,” Gunn explained.

Superman is currently eyeing a box office debut of more than $200 million worldwide – but reviews have just dropped, so its pre-sales could see a big surge before the weekend.

Where to stream Superman

Superman will eventually be available to stream on HBO Max, but it hasn’t been announced when it’ll drop on streaming.

The same can’t be said for every Warner Bros movie; for example, Red One was produced in collaboration with Amazon MGM, so it ended up on Prime Video first. Similarly, Jason Statham’s A Working Man debuted on Amazon’s streaming service.

However, Superman has been produced by DC Studios, and considering the later DCEU movies came to HBO Max after their theatrical release and it’s the streaming home of Creature Commandos, Superman is guaranteed to end up there.

As for when it’ll be available to stream, it depends on how successful it is. The Godzilla x Kong sequel took 97 days to come to streaming, while Dune: Part Two took just 81 days before it arrived on Max.

However, Barbie took a whopping 147 days until it dropped on Max, likely because it ended up becoming the biggest movie of 2023.

A Minecraft Movie is a bit of an anomaly. It’s one of the biggest films of 2025, grossing north of $900 million… and it only took 77 days to come to HBO Max, likely due to its theatrical sales grinding to a halt.

It’s a big summer in cinemas, and Superman has a big competitor in a couple of weeks: Fantastic Four, which crashed Fandango’s website when tickets went on sale. So, it could be available to stream as early as October, or it could be much later this year.
