Sydney Sweeney has been at the center of yet another controversy this week following her American Eagle ad campaign, and now her brother has weighed in on the debate with a “good jeans” post.

The Euphoria star hit the headlines in May when she pulled a Belle Delphine and sold her bathwater in the form of a limited edition Dr Squatch soap bar. While some thought it was a hilarious publicity stunt, others found it, well, kind of disgusting.

However, her latest stunt with American Eagle features references to Sweeney having good “jeans”. It’s a play on words, but the ads have been accused of promoting eugenics – a largely discredited belief that the human population can be “improved” through selective breeding.

Amid the debate, reports surfaced that Sweeney has been registered Republican since 2024, with Donald Trump sharing his support for her and the American Eagle campaign. The Anyone But You actress has yet to respond, but her brother has.

Taking to Instagram, Sydney’s 25-year-old brother Trent Sweeney shared an image of his certification after being promoted to staff sergeant in the US Air Force. Alongside this, he joked, “It’s them good jeans.”

He also shared a post of him receiving his certificate, writing, “I’m excited for this next step in my career and thank everyone that’s been a part of it so far,” which Sydney ‘liked’.

Although Sydney hasn’t responded to the backlash, the American Eagle ad remains on her Instagram account. In one of the clips, a camera zooms in on her butt as she gets into a car, before a voiceover says, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”

In another, the camera pans across her body as she says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”

While some argued it was a simple play on words, others said it promoted eugenics, a disproven theory famously adopted by Hitler and the Nazis who committed genocide in an attempt to create the “Aryan race”.

Since the news that the Euphoria star registered as a Republican in the year Trump was re-elected, she’s facing further criticism, with some fans feeling she doesn’t deserve to play Christy Martin, a boxer and member of the LGBTQ+ community, in an upcoming biopic

Taking to the comments section of a recent post on the new movie, one wrote, “Can we not put MAGAts in queer roles please?” Another said, “You think MAGAts are gonna see this movie about a lesbian boxer?”

“A woman who aligns with this actual woman’s lifestyle should’ve represented her,” added a third. “Not someone who consistently shows through her branding and her actions that she is not an ally.”

Others have jumped in to defend her, with one writing under the American Eagle ad, “Don’t apologize! You did nothing wrong.”
