Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of the upcoming The Batman 2, has revealed that he’s got an idea for an HBO TV show set in Matt Reeves’ Elseworlds universe. Even though it’s not in development, many DC fans are already shutting the idea down and there’s one reason why.

Right now, all eyes are on James Gunn’s new DCU with the arrival and success of Superman, which just passed the $500 million mark at the global box office.

As for Reeves’ gritty Gotham, the filmmaker confirmed The Batman 2 script is finally finished, and Gunn has nothing but support for the upcoming DC movie, confirming that “it’s great.”

There’s a case to be made for Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne to enter the DCU, but for now, Gunn is set on introducing his own version of the Caped Crusader, meaning two Batmen will exist across parallel franchises.

The Batman spinoff series idea reignites DCU debate

This is the reason Tomlin’s hopes for a TV show have been met with apprehension from some fans, reigniting the debate about the future of Reeves’ continuity. The topic of conversation came up when the writer took to X/Twitter for an AMA session.

“Is there an HBO/HBO Max TV series that you want to make or had an idea for set in The Batman universe?” asked one, to which the writer replied, “Yes.”

In response to the news, one person wrote, “Somebody gotta tell him the universe is getting wrapped up after The Batman 2,” while another said, “The children yearn for Battinson being the DCU’s Batman.”

Another added, “I wonder how much DC is willing to put into the Reevesverse. They’re obviously down for two more movies and more Penguin seasons, but I wonder if they’ll allow anything else to come from it considering it has an expiration date and they’re trying to get the DCU going.”

However, others aren’t against the idea, with one suggesting Gunn may be gearing up for a crossover further down the line. “I can see a trilogy, a few spinoff series, and allowing the DCU Batman to coexist while that’s going on,” they wrote.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if deep down Gunn wants to do his own spin on a Crisis on Infinite Earths for his second or third ‘saga,’ which would allow for The Batman universe (and even the DCEU and Arrowverse) to interact.

“If he does, better to keep that universe going to give the viewing audience more of a chance to connect with those versions of the characters.”

And then there are all of the suggestions of who should be the focus of Tomlin’s hypothetical superhero TV show. “I wonder if he wants to loosely adapt Catwoman: When in Rome,” said one. “I want to see what Catwoman is doing after The Batman.”

Another commented, “The Robin. Do it. We need it. I’d love for people to get to know the origins of Dick Grayson. Not quite sure if the whole circus act works in the Reeves verse. I wouldn’t mind if they would do a new modern take on it.”

It’s worth noting that between The Batman 2 and Game of Thrones’ Aegon’s Conquest series, Tomlin is a busy man right now. Even if his show did get the greenlight, we wouldn’t be seeing it anytime soon.
