Following the explosive twist in Gen V Season 2 Episode 7, series creator Eric Kripke has opened up about the future of The Boys universe. If we want Gen V Season 3, there’s something he needs us to do.

The Boys Season 5 is set to bring the flagship story to a close next year, with one question hanging in the balance: will Butcher and/or Homelander die? Only time will tell if the Prime Video series veers away from the comics’ ending.

But this is far from the only supe story we’re getting. We’ve already had spinoffs Gen V and Diabolical, and there are plenty more in the pipeline, including prequel series Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico.

Until then, all eyes are on the Gen V Season 2 finale, with Kripke opening up about the Episode 7 twist, and whether we’ll be getting a third chapter in the future. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Eric Kripke says Gen V Season 3 depends on one thing

In a new interview with The Wrap, Kripke revealed that there’s a plan for Gen V Season 3, but the team needs enough viewers to watch it to justify it getting the greenlight. And there’s a time constraint, as “Now’s the time that they’re [Amazon] paying attention to the numbers.”

His comments arose when the outlet asked if Amazon’s leadership changes will impact the future of The Boys franchise. Last month, it was announced that Peter Friedlander will be Amazon’s new head of global TV, having exited Netflix after 14 years.

Kripke replied, “My guess is it’s the same. We’re fortunate in that we’ve always gotten a lot of support. We still have to deliver ratings. It’s a very classic, old-school TV thing, but we need viewers to show up to justify more of them.

“We have a plan for Gen V Season 3, and we’re psyched about it, but we need enough viewers to watch Season 2 to justify Season 3. Now’s the time that they’re paying attention to the numbers.

“So don’t watch even a year from now. Turn on Prime [Video] and watch it now. If enough people watch then we’ll get a Season 3.” Kripke said the “same applies to Vought Rising Season 1.”

“We have plans for a Season 2, if we can,” he continued. “They’ve been nothing but supportive, and they’re giving us our opportunities. But it’s a business and we also have to deliver. So hopefully the audience shows up.”

As for how long Gen V could theoretically go on for, Kripke remained tight-lipped, although he did imply the characters could end up in other TV shows, much like The Boys, down the line.

“As long as there’s an interesting story to tell and new facets to reveal, I’m in. Without spoiling anything, I think the universe post-The Boys Season 5 is such a fascinating universe, there’s a lot to explore,” he said.

“It’s so much more of the wild west in terms of, like, f**king anything goes – without giving anything away. And I think that would be a blast to put the Gen V kids in the middle of.”

A number of Godolkin students are set to join The Boys Season 5, with Kripke revealing that the final chapter will take place “about six months after Gen V Season 2 ends.”

Kripke also spoke about other projects in development, with Vought Rising officially in the works. The Boys: Mexico is still in the development stage, but it’s bad news for fans hoping for a second chapter of the animated spinoff Diabolical.

“Mexico is just being developed right now. The pilot script is being written. Gareth [Dunnet-Alcocer] is a wonderful writer and I think it’s hilarious. I hope it gets made, but [it’s] just in that development phase,” he told the outlet.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a Season 2 of Diabolical. It’s not for lack of us pushing. I think ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season, sadly.

“Although, we love it and Simon [Racioppa], the showrunner, would be game to do it, but we haven’t gotten a go ahead on that.”

Kripke “irritated” after fans work out Gen V Season 2 Episode 7 twist

Finally, the showrunner spoke about that twist in Gen V Season 2 Episode 7: the new Godolkin University dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater) has actually been Dr. Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) this whole time.

Kripke acknowledged that the fans are “very smart” for picking up clues along the way, although he’s a little annoyed that so many were able to figure out the twist before it was revealed.

“I’m well aware that a lot of the fans online have been picking apart the clues and got on the right scent,” he explained. “They’re very, very smart, and I give them credit. In the same breath, I’m irritated, they figured it out.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Slater said he didn’t initially know about the twist. “I had been given vague clues,” he said.

“It was like, ‘You’re really prominent towards the last two episodes,’ ‘You have these little moments beforehand,’ and ‘You’re kind of the big bad.’ But they didn’t quite tell me about the twist with Hamish.

“So the first few episodes that I read, I didn’t know. Then I got on a phone call and Michelle [Fazekas] laid it all out for me. After that phone call, they sent me [Episodes] 7 and 8, and I got to read it.”

He went on to describe Godolkin as “so incredible and dark and twisted and weird. It was an added layer of awesome to work on the twist.”
