The Harry Potter TV show is dedicating each season to one of the novels, and because of that, will differ to the movie adaptations in one major way.
Production on HBO‘s forthcoming Harry Potter TV series is well under way, with the show set to drop in early 2027.
Dominic McLaughlin is playing Harry Potter, Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton has been cast as Hermione Grainger.
As for villains, Johnny Flynn is Lucius Malfoy, while new Lord of the Flies star Lox Pratt is his dastardly son Draco, and thanks to a new interview with the latter, we now know one way in which the series will set itself apart from the films.
Harry Potter TV show will delve into Draco’s home life
There was confusion and some head-scratching when Johnny Flynn was cast in Season 1 of the Harry Potter series, as we don’t actually meet that character until book two – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
But Draco actor Lox Pratt has been hinting at what’s ahead in the show, and it explains how and why we’re meeting the Malfoy family sooner.
“I think with this adaptation, you get to see so much more than the books,” Pratt tells 1883. “[The books] are very much over Harry’s shoulder, which is great, and that’s how they played the film as well. And I think [showrunner] Francesca [Gardiner] and [director] Mark [Mylod] have been audible about this in their interviews, there’s just so much more that you get to see.
“You get to see all the teachers in their little rooms. You get to see Draco at home. I won’t spoil too much about that, but there are some brilliant scenes at home where you start to get an insight into how he is.”
We’ll finally discover what makes Malfoy Jr. tick
Meaning that as well as meeting characters and seeing locations during different moments in the story, Draco will be given back-story and context that should make him less simple bully-boy, and more a well-rounded and three-dimensional villain.
Pratt believes that’s in the show, adding: “Similar to Lord of the Flies, I was grateful that we had the same freedom to explore these characters. Because in the films, Draco is sort of 2D; he is the sneery villain.
“I feel like there’s so much more – you need to understand why. And you see little glints of it in the film with Lucius and stuff. I think [the series] is really brilliant. I can’t wait to bring it to the screen.”
