This premium hardcover release features the full text printed in red and black, 30 full-color illustrations, two removable fold-out maps drawn by Tolkien’s son, Christopher, pages from the Book of Mazarbul, and sketches and maps from Tolkien himself. These special sketches were done as he was composing the original book. All of this is bound in a striking cover that showcases the Eye of Sauron and features a vivid red spine with foil accents. This is a book that looks striking on any bookshelf, coffee table, or really anywhere that it sits.
It’s hard to underestimate the impact that Tolkien and his works set in the land of Middle-earth have had on not only the writing world but on pop culture in general. It’s hard to imagine that we would have games like Dungeons & Dragons if we never heard about how Frodo and the other Hobbits met Strider at the Prancing Pony in (the original release of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 used the term “hobbit” but had to be changed to the “halfling” we all know and love now after the Tolkien estate raised issues), or many of the epic fantasy novels of modern day, like Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, if it hadn’t been for The Lord of the Rings. And of course, we wouldn’t have Peter Jackson’s movies.
