The Night Agent 3 is about to drop on Netflix, and in advance of that launch, creator Shawn Ryan has a major update about the status of Season 4.
The Night Agent was a surprise hit for Netflix, with Season 1 launching in March of 2023 to little fanfare, then becoming one of the streamers most watched shows ever, with 98.2 million views during its first 91 days.
Based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, the show stars Gabriel Basso as the title character, a low-level FBI agent who monitors an emergency phone for covert threats, and becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy inside the White House.
The Night Agent Season 2 followed in January of 2025, Season 3 hits this week – on February 19, 2026 – and there’s also encouraging news concerning Season 4…
The Night Agent Season 4 writers room is now active
According to showrunner Shawn Ryan, The Night Agent Season 4 writers room got up-and-running in 2025, with stories shaped and scripts written. But Season 4 hasn’t yet received that all-important greenlight from Netflix.
“Season 4 is not officially picked up yet, but a while ago, in calendar year 2025, they did quietly pick up a writers room,” Ryan told Deadline. “We’ve been working for a while on the storyline. We have some scripts, we are breaking stories.”
Netflix is waiting to see how Season 3 fares before giving a fourth the go-ahead, which is understandable, as Season 2 numbers were around 50% down on Season 1.
But there’s also a ticking clock, as a November 2025 tax credit is in play to move production from New York to Los Angeles, which comes with a six-month window to start work. But thanks to that writers room, the Night Agent team is ready to get going.
“To Netflix’s credit, they want to make sure that the creative side of things is always buttoned up before committing that amount of money,” Ryan explained.
“We’re in the story-breaking, script-writing phase, and my guess is, sometime in the next [few weeks], they’ll make a decision about officially greenlighting Season 4, and if and when they do, we’ll be ready to go with the scripts so that there’s not that much time between Season 3 and Season 4.”
