A Resident Evil reboot is planned for 2026, and if a new leak is to be believed, we now know what happens in the movie.
Zach Cregger burst onto the horror scene with feature debut Barbarian, and he’s following it with the eagerly anticipated Weapons, which hits screens on August 8, 2025.
Next up, he’s co-writing and directing a Resident Evil reboot, which Cregger previously promised will be “built in the spirit” of the games.
And if a new rumor is correct, we now know who the protagonist is, and how he fits into the story. Meaning POTENTIAL SPOILERS ahead…
Resident Evil reboot revolves around an organ courier
According to scooper Daniel RPK, this is the Resident Evil synopsis that Zach Cregger is working from: “Bryan, a laid-back organ courier, is sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car”
“She survives – but something is very wrong. As he tries to help, Bryan stumbles into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities”
Austin Abrams is playing Bryan in the movie, which makes sense as he’ll next be seen in Cregger’s own Weapons.
Zach Cregger hasn’t watched any Resident Evil movies
Zach Cregger is currently doing publicity rounds for Weapons, which means he’s fielding questions about what’s next, and when asked why he wants to do a Resident Evil movie, the writer-director told ComicBook:
“Because I love the games. I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games.”
And it sounds like the movie will have no connection to what’s come before on film, as Cregger admitted: “I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love… I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip.”
