The long-awaited follow-up to 2010’s The Social Network is finally in motion, with Aaron Sorkin set to direct what insiders claim won’t be a true-blue sequel to the iconic film.

As reported by Deadline on June 25, 2025, The Social Network Part II is currently in the works, with Sorkin both writing and directing the forthcoming flick.

However, sources close to the project tell Deadline that rather than being a straight up sequel to the original, this movie is more of a “follow-up” to its predecessor.

From what we know so far, The Social Network Part II will focus on events during the 2020 US Presidential Election, with sources claiming it tackles “Facebook’s effect on teens, preteens, violence and countries outside the U.S.”

Sorkin previously floated an idea for the sequel in a 2024 interview, during which he spoke about Facebook in relation to the 2020 election.

“Yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” he said on an episode of The Town podcast. “…Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement.

“..There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth. If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by switching a one to a zero.”

Thus far, Todd Black, Peter Rice, Stuart Besser and Sorkin himself are attached to produce the Social Network Part II, although little else is known about the project at the time of writing.

It’s unclear if Jesse Eisenberg will be reprising his role as Mark Zuckerberg — but if he is, it’s likely that he’ll have to get in shape, since Zuckerberg has famously gotten into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the years since becoming one of the world’s most famous tech billionaires.
