The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski has spoken out in defense of George R.R. Martin (and made a little joke at his expense), even presenting his own theory for why The Winds of Winter is taking so long.

Martin has been working on the penultimate installment of his A Song of Ice and Fire saga for over 15 years – yes, there’s still another book after The Winds of Winter.

Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near ready to release, and the author knows that he’s testing fans’ patience. “You don’t care about anything but Winds of Winter. You’ve told me so often enough,” he wrote in a blog post.

HBO’s Game of Thrones notoriously adapted beyond Martin’s source material and concluded the story without his input. In Sapkowski’s eyes, that’s where the problems started.

Sapkowski, whose fantasy saga has been adapted for the screen in Netflix’s The Witcher (which returns with Season 4 this year), is still actively developing new books.

“I will write something else. Relax. No need to fear. And unlike George R.R. Martin – whom, by the way, I know personally – when I say I’ll write something, I will,” he joked during the Opole book festival (as per Redanian Intelligence).

He then made his stance on Martin’s situation very clear. “But I totally understand him. Because if someone had pulled a stunt like that on me, filming a series based on my books, and then getting ahead of what I intended to write, I’d also be wondering whether there’s any point in writing anymore.

“If it’s already been done, right? Makes no sense. It’s nice when they adapt your work, that’s the author’s bloody right, but to adapt what doesn’t exist yet, to extrapolate like that? That’s just indecent.”

Sapkowski added: “So Martin still isn’t writing, probably because he got offended that they filmed the continuation [of Game of Thrones], but I bet he didn’t give the money back, knowing how life goes. I wouldn’t have given it back.”
