The Witcher Season 4 is just around the corner, ushering in a new Geralt after Henry Cavill left the Netflix show. Liam Hemsworth takes on the mantle, with showrunner Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich revealing the differences between the two versions.

Cavill’s departure from the beloved fantasy show was controversial to say the least. Even though he’s literally Superman, the actor had to fight for the role, and he did so due to his deep love for Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and CD Projekt Red’s video games.

He was famously protective of the source material, often pushing for Geralt to stay closer to Sapkowski’s original vision, which is why the fans were loud when Cavill announced his departure from the show in October 2022.

It’s also why there’s much anticipation about how Hemsworth’s performance will compare. Although we’ll have to wait for The Witcher Season 4 to drop to find out, Schmidt-Hissrich has teased what to expect from the new Geralt – and there’s one key difference.

How Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt is different to Henry Cavill’s in The Witcher

In a conversation with Dexerto, Schmidt-Hissrich revealed that Hemsworth’s Geralt has undergone some changes: he’s “a lot more emotional.” Cavill’s version of the monster hunter was famously stoic, mirroring much of Geralt’s portrayal in Sapkowski’s books.

While Hemsworth’s version is too, this change reflects the progression of the story amid Geralt’s quest to find Ciri. Not only is he more emotional, but he’s also delivering the laughs in The Witcher Season 4.

“Geralt is a little funnier this season. He’s a little more dry. He’s also a lot more emotional. He’s going through a lot of different things than we’ve seen in the past,” Schmidt-Hissrich told us.

“And I think Liam was really able to access these sort of vulnerable levels in his performance that we just hadn’t had the opportunity to see before.”

The showrunner went on to explain that the cast and crew were initially “nervous” when Hemsworth first stepped on to the set.  ”We knew that we were doing something big and we were making a big shift,” she said.

“[But] he has such an ease about him as a human. He’s so comfortable… someone used the word ‘effortless’ yesterday and I’m like, ‘That’s it. Everything about him is just effortless.’ He came on and, in some ways, he put every one at ease with his tone and his comfort level.

“But also he’s stepping into a really big family that all know each other, so they’re all comfortable too. And it just was this really sort of beautiful, synchronous thing. It was really fun.”
