Alien: Earth has introduced fans to a new, horrifying Xenomorph, and over 40 years after ‘Big Chap’ made his debut, fans have given him a new name.
Xenomorphs aren’t like other fictional monsters. They can’t be bargained with, nor can they be domesticated, trained, or tamed – they are natural predators, or as Ash says in the original film, “the perfect organism… its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.”
If anything, that’s a good reason for them to have funny nicknames. On the set of Ridley Scott’s film, cast and crew referred to the titular alien as ‘Big Chap’, a name that’s since been used by toy companies and other merchandise makers.
While not as famous as ‘Big Chap’, there have been nicknames for the others; for example, speedrunners widely referred to Alien: Isolation’s Xeno as Steve. Now, fans have come up with another name to mark Alien: Earth.
Alien: Earth’s Xenomorph has a simple name
Fans of Alien: Earth have been calling the Xenomorph ‘Bear’ since the first episode.
There isn’t a behind-the-scenes anecdote this time. In Episode 2, Wendy points out that the Xenomorph’s scratches along the wall look like they were made by bear claws. Plus, FX (which distributes the show with Hulu and Disney Plus) also made The Bear.
That’s really all there is to it, but it’s been warmly embraced by the LV246 subreddit (the largest Alien community online, with over 250,000 “colonists”).
“I dig the name Bear for this fella, fits him very well,” one user wrote. “If we agree that Bear is Bear in here, it will spread, and Bear will forever be known colloquially as Bear,” another commented.
“Bear is an instant classic name for this one,” a third wrote. “Bear is the John Wick of the Xenomorphs,” a fourth joked.
That’s another thing: this Xenomorph does not mess around. He is incredibly sneaky, smart, and vicious, with some fans already declaring him to be the scariest of all the Xenomorphs in the franchise.
“Bear looked at every Xeno scene in the franchise and said, ‘I AIN’T GOIN OUT LIKE THEM’ then proceeded to snort 10 lines,” one fan joked.
“It’s like a ninja or something. There were dozens and dozens of Xenomorphs in Aliens that are like acidic squeaky toys compared to Bear,” another commented.
