Following a divisive premiere, One Punch Man Season 3 Episode 2, ‘Monster Traits’, has landed. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, there’s an easy way to watch it for free right now.

Expectations for the third chapter of the One Punch Man anime were sky high after a long gap and what many believed to be an underwhelming Season 2. You see, despite its impeccable debut, the series underwent a production overhaul in 2016.

Significantly, Madhouse simply had too much on its plate, and so it passed on the responsibility to fellow anime studio J.C.Staff, a move that has received criticism over a perceived dip in animation quality from Season 2 onwards.

Season 3 Episode 1 did little to quell concerns, earning the show’s lowest IMDb score to date. Although Episode 2 is equally divisive, there’s still plenty to enjoy. If you want to make up your own mind, here’s how to watch it without spending a dime.

Why is everyone talking about Season 3 Episode 2?

Due to an Amazon outage, there’s no IMDb score for the latest installment just yet. However, plenty of One Punch Man fans have been dissecting Season 3 Episode 2 online, and it’s proving divisive once more.

Among the criticisms is the opening sequence, which features a protest using static frames rather than active animation.

Taking to Reddit, one wrote, “The protest scene at the beginning took me out of the episode immediately. The panning stills, the shot of the heckler between two frozen protestors (who are still walking with walking sounds?) and the crowd suddenly disappearing from the street when those two people chase the heckler.”

Another said, “For Episode 2, during the initial protest scene, wtf was that? When Garou is moving there, you can see a couple in the background – frozen, not reacting to the protest or the incident happening right there, standing there like mannequins. WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?

“The sound design during Garou stopping Ripper’s blade sounds like water flowing in the pipe after you flush your toilet, wtf? And it’s bad. There are no frames during the fights, no animation.”

“Honestly, the best case scenario would be to just cancel the anime series,” added a third.

“It’s been a big f**king mess that they might as well end the anime’s run and hope that someday in the future, the series will return under a different studio with a consistent release schedule.

“Murata’s art and One’s story is way too good to be treated in such a disrespectful manner.”

One person who sits in the middle said, “Man, as someone who’s only watching this and One Piece as current animes, this animation is really disappointing.

“But, One Piece has a massive budget and some of the best animators and directors in the industry, it’s not really fair to compare to the much smaller budget going into this.

“And honestly, it’s not that bad, the non-animated sections are mostly during dialogue moments. When something needs to be animated, they usually animate it pretty well. A lot of the Garou scenes looked good.

“My main gripe is sometimes it’s really jarring because it’s really noticeable. That protest at the beginning was 100% still frames, it really took me out of it…

“Hopefully the fight next episode is good. The trailers looked like they have it animated pretty well, but we’ll have to wait and see the actual episode.”

There are plenty of fans who have jumped in to defend the episode too, including this person who said, “It legitimately wasn’t that bad. Pacing could definitely use work but I laughed at some parts of the episode (including Garou sliding).”

Another commented, “This episode honestly wasn’t that bad. It still has that weird stiffness, and the voice acting also seemed off, but other than that, it was a perfectly mid episode.”
