Michael Eugene Archer, better known as D’Angelo, has died at the age of 51. You can learn more about the legendary R&B musician through the 2019 documentary Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo, but there’s only one way to watch it right now.

The Grammy-winning singer, best known for pioneering the neo-soul music genre, died on Tuesday morning (October 14) following a private battle with cancer. His death was confirmed by his family in a statement shared with Variety

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life… We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind,” they said.

“We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.” As tributes continue to pour in, there’s been an increased interest in the Devil’s Pie documentary

How to watch D’Angelo: Devil’s Pie documentary

D’Angelo: Devil’s Pie has never had a wide release, meaning the only way to watch it right now is through unofficial means. It’s currently available to watch on Bilibili, a video sharing platform.

Bilibili is a legal app, but movies and TV shows uploaded there may be in violation of their copyright terms, so it may not always be available on there. As such, it could be removed if more viewers tune in.

In the wake of D’Angelo’s death, one user uploaded the documentary to YouTube in full here, but it’s since been removed. It also used to be in the Internet Archive but again the doc was removed.

There have been multiple calls from fans over the years to give the film a release, as it’s not even available to rent or buy through on-demand platforms such as Amazon Prime.

Devil’s Pie, named after D’Angelo’s 1998 song, first released in May 2019. It follows the singer’s years-long hiatus from music following his sophomore LP, 2000’s Voodoo.

As per the synopsis, “D’Angelo had it all: two platinum selling albums, a sold out world tour and a body chiselled to perfection. However, one day at the height of his career in 2000 the soul singer vanished.

“For 12 years he descended into darkness. Out of nowhere, in December 2014, his third album Black Messiah was suddenly released: soundtrack of the lost years.”
