After the trailer for Wicked: For Good dropped, you might have seen social media posts claiming Taylor Swift is starring as Dorothy. Not only are they wrong, but we know who’s set to play the role.

Frankly, Taylor Swift is the busiest woman on the planet. She wrapped up a monster worldwide tour at the end of 2024, re-recorded her first six albums before buying the original masters back for a hefty price tag of $360 million.

As it stands, she’s taking a well-deserved break. However, now hype is ramping up for the new Wicked movie, she’s been tipped by some social accounts to play Dorothy, who’s only been seen fleetingly from behind.

Even with the Eras Tour logic telling us she can’t have filmed Wicked simultaneously, the rumor mill is merely churning out fake AI images. While no official casting announcement has been made – and might be kept a secret until we’re watching the new movie in cinemas – we’ve got a good idea of who is actually playing Dorothy in Wicked Part 2.

Alisha Weir is still favorite to play Dorothy in Wicked Part 2

After she was seen on the red carpet for Wicked Part 1, Alisha Weir has been the favorite to play Dorothy in Wicked: For Good ever since.

You’ll have likely seen the 15-year-old star in movies like Abigail, Matilda the Musical, and Wicked Little Letters, with a voiceover role in The Land of Sometimes currently in development.

Weir addressed the rumors during the week of Wicked Part 1’s release, and the answer wasn’t an outright no.

“When I saw it, I was like, ‘this is absolutely crazy’, and it went so crazy on social media, and everybody was asking me,” she told RTÉ News. “I mean, that would be wonderful. I’m such a big fan of Wicked, and I saw the first one with my family.

She also told Spin 1038: “The rumours have gone pretty crazy and I’ve seen it everywhere. That would be really, really, really cool. I would love that. I’m such a big fan of Wicked and the first part is so incredible.”

As for Swift, the image circulated online is AI-generated. This is where online news accounts can catch you out – it’s shared by PobBase, a parody account of popular culture go-to PopBase. Obviously, Swift has made no public comment on this or any potential involvement in the movie.

While we see her referenced multiple times in the new trailer for Wicked: For Good, director Jon M Chu had already teased Dorothy as having a bigger role in the movie than she does in the original musical – where she is referred to off-stage but never actually seen.

“I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two,” he explained. “There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to Part Two.”
