Thousands of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles were stolen from the back of a truck while the driver was at a truck stop, police have confirmed.

As reported by 9NEWS, the theft took place on the morning of June 8 at Love’s Truck Stop in Bennett, Colorado, while the driver wasn’t inside the vehicle.

According to the Aprahoe County Sheriff’s Office, a total of 2,810 Switch 2 consoles were stolen from the truck.

Speaking with the authorities, the driver told deputies that he wasn’t aware of the inventory he was transporting and only became aware of the theft when he returned to his truck to discover the cab’s trailer had been opened.

At the standard retail price of $500, the number of Switch 2 consoles stolen would amount to a total value of $1.4 million. That figure is unlikely to be reflective of what thieves could make selling every console, however.

Black market goods

Speaking to 9NEWS, MSU Denver computer science professor Steve Beaty expressed his belief that the stolen goods would likely be sold through black market means, rather than through legitimate sites like Craig’s List or eBay.

“Because they’re stolen, I would expect them to head to the dark web pretty quickly unless they’re shipped out of the country,” he told the network, adding that it took him “two minutes” to find a Switch 2 being sold at half price in such places.
