Tomb Raider just fans got their first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, and everyone is saying the same thing about her look.
The first Tomb Raider game hit shelves in 1996, spawned an ongoing franchise, and immediately sparked talk of a movie adaptation.
That happened when Lara Croft: Tomb Raider released in 2001, with Angelina Jolie playing the title role, and the film was such a success that it was soon followed by sequel The Cradle of Life in 2003.
Alicia Vikander then played the character in a 2018 reboot simply titled Tomb Raider, and when that didn’t establish a new franchise, the character made the move to streaming, via a forthcoming Prime Video show.
Tomb Raider fans impressed by Sophie Turner’s “game accurate” Lara Croft
Fleabag mastermind Phoebe Waller-Bridge is overseeing the new Tomb Raider series as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, alongside Chad Hodge.
Production is now underway, and Amazon MGM Studios has released a first image of Sophie Turner in costume, prompting multiple fans to post much the same sentiment.
“Yeah they nailed it,” wrote one, while another said “great costume, especially the glasses,” and a third added “Woaaaa. Amazon killing it with the game adaptions accuracy lately.”
Another concurred regarding game comparisons, stating: “Clear homage to the original game as opposed to the rebooted version.”
“Wow, Sophie Turner looks like a perfect fit for Lara Croft!” posted one commentator. “She’s got the toughness and intensity – can’t wait to see her take on the role. This series just became my most anticipated show on Prime Video!”
While there’s more praise for the former Game of Thrones star in this message: “That’s a strong first look. Curious to see Sophie Turner bring her own edge to Lara.”
There’s inevitable comparisons with Angelina Jolie, with some unfavorable. But others think that the new version already looks to be a marked improvement.
“Sophie Turner just made me forget Angelina ever existed,” said one potential viewer, while another had stronger words: “This is easily the best live action version of Lara, holy sh*t, this is insane… Jolie version doesn’t even comes close.”
But while there’s optimism around the forthcoming show, some people are waiting to judge, with one writing: “Looking forward to seeing that first trailer with Sophie in the role. Need to see how she is in action, raiding tombs with the dual pistols.”
And another stated: “She definitely has the presence to pull off a younger, grittier Lara. Hoping they stay true to the survival-adventure tone of the newer games. Fingers crossed for a strong story to match the casting!”
