A tour guide in Egypt was arrested after he scratched a drawing onto the Pyramids of Giza and tried to rub it off, all while explaining things to tourists.

Anytime you go on a tour of a sacred site or historical monument, you’re told not to touch anything. You might end up damaging an ancient artifact or, at worse, think you’re Nic Cage in the National Treasure movies and try to steal something.

When you’re a tour guide for one of these sites too, you should probably know the rules better than most.

Well, in the case of one man in Egypt, he was arrested and removed from the Pyramids of Giza after drawing on the bottom of the historical site to try and explain a few things to his tour group.

Tour guide “damaged” pyramids with drawings

That’s right, the tour guide drew on the outside base of one of the pyramids, trying to explain a few things to his group. The man’s drawings were captured on video, sparking backlash online.

“The accused person was successfully apprehended, and when confronted, he confessed to committing the incident as described,” the Egyptian Ministry of Interior posted on X, noting that part of the outer base had been “damaged” by the drawings. “Legal measures have been taken.”

The Ministry of Interior also added that “the drawings had been removed by the competent authorities,” after a report from an “antiquities inspector” in the local area.

Gaining access to the Pyramids is incredibly hard in the first place, especially without a tour guide or special permission.

YouTube star MrBeast was able to film at the Pyramids of Giza for 100 hours back in early 2025, and wanted to record with Joe Rogan there, too. However, the podcast host was unable to make it.

“Imagine we’re on top of the middle of the pyramid, it’s just his normal desk, and we’re sitting on top, on the tip, and we’re just cranking out a podcast, I thought that would have been so cool,” he told Steve-O. “You can’t climb there, so we would have had to go up there by helicopter.”
