Twitch CEO Dan Clancy admitted it’s “tricky” to deal with viewbots and pointed to some other platforms that are having issues with them.

Botting to get on a bigger standing has been around in the content game for a long time. They’ve been used both maliciously and on purpose too, with some trolls looking to land creators in trouble by giving them more followers and a bigger live viewership.

It is something that Twitch has been dealing with for a while. Back in July, the Amazon-owned platform announced that they would be “meaningfully” improving their ability to “identify viewbots, inauthentic viewership, and other potentially fake engagement.

In August, Twitch then saw a 9% drop in overall viewership. The livestreaming website hit a five-year low for viewership too, despite viewbots accounted for an estimated 30 million hours of fake watch time.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy even joked about viewbots during his appearance on Kai Cenat’s Mafiathon 3 after Tylil pointed out a drop in his own viewership.

“Damn, it sounds like, were you viewbotting yourself man?” Clancy joked. However, he did press onto a more serious point by admitting it is “tricky” to deal with fake viewers and profiles.

“I mean, its a tricky thing because they’re out there, always,” he said after Kai asked if Twitch had “improved” the restrictions on viewbotting. “And it’s the same with TikTok and Instagram and everything, but yeah.”

As Clancy notes, it’s not just something that affects Twitch, but the Amazon-owned platform has been under more scrutiny than others.

Twitch has had to shut down claims that bot accounts have been receiving gifted subs in place of actual fans, too. That followed streamer Quin69 noting that fresh profiles were raking them in.

“We continue to be committed to identifying and combatting viewbots, inauthentic viewership, and other potentially fake engagement on our platform,” they told Dexerto.
