Twitch has come under fire after a new rule change prevents streamers from promoting their multi-streams on other websites.
For years, streamers were loyal to a certain platform, either being bound by contract or just having a massive fanbase on there. However, that has changed in recent years.
Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins kickstarted the multi-streaming revolution, broadcasting on Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, and even Instagram at once. Plenty of other big-name streamers have followed, and platforms have started to relax their rules on things, including being able to make money from broadcasts that aren’t exclusive to them.
With multi-streaming becoming bigger, platforms are having to adapt at pace. And while they will allow multi-streams, Twitch won’t allow streamers to promote those other platforms in certain ways.
Twitch cracks down on promoting multi-streams
“Our goal is to make clearer what types of promotion we allow on Twitch. For example, you can share links to your social media profiles,” Twitch Support posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“But, we don’t allow you to use Twitch chat, About panels, or other surfaces to actively redirect viewers to livestreams happening someplace else.”
That followed them adding “clarifying information” to their FAQs about simulcasting. Streamers are allowed to provide links to other social media platforms in their About Me page. This has always been the case with links to YouTube, X/Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and beyond.
However, links in Twitch Chat, stream titles, and banners are not permitted. “Twitch may not be used to drive users to a live stream on another platform or service,” they said.
Yet, some streamers believe it is actually “contradicting information” from the Amazon-owned platform.
“Make your service the best place for creators and they won’t want to push people to other platforms,” one said. “You limit creators this way, which in turn, stops or hurts growth. Do you really want to help less established channels,” another said.
“I am officially de-prioritizing Twitch. Yall keep making straight up anti-creator changes,” another commented.
