Uber has revealed that it will start paying drivers to complete “digital tasks” to help with AI, but it isn’t available to everyone just yet.
Artificial Intelligence, AI, has started impacting plenty of jobs across the world. Restaurants have started using AI to construct menus and even cook some bits of food, while car manufacturers have robotic arms to fit certain parts of cars.
As it become increasingly widespread online too, other fields are looking to adapt and bring AI into their world. That includes Uber who, won’t offer AI-driven cars yet, but will put their army of drivers to work in building up AI.
Starting in the middle of October, Uber drivers in the United States will be offered “digital tasks” that they can complete while they wait for their next job.
Uber drivers can make money
These digital jobs, include things like scanning a restaurant menu to upload it, completing narrations, and sending voice recordings of themselves. They’ll likely take a minute or two each, so they aren’t too time-consuming.
Drivers will make an extra few dollars for each one they complete, so it’s not like they’ll be able to start living off the AI collection side hustle. They will still have to do passenger drop-offs and food delivery as well.
The new jobs will ultimately feed Uber’s foray into the AI field as the company purchased Segments AI in early October.
However, it has led to some concerns. “This is grim….really grim,” one user commented. “This has got to be one of the most dystopian things I’ve read in recent times,” another said.
“Why not offer the opportunity to people sitting in the back of the car doing nothing during rides?” another added, suggesting Uber put their passengers to work too.
