A Ukrainian YouTuber with over 6 million subscribers and two of his friends have been arrested by Japanese authorities for broadcasting themselves breaking into a house in the Fukushima Exclusion Zone.

The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster took place on March 11, 2011, after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami caused electrical grid failure and destroyed much of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant’s backup energy sources.

Since then, authorities have enacted decontamination efforts and cordoned off areas outside the power plant in a section called the Fukushima Exclusion Zone. It is strictly forbidden to enter this zone, with punishments ranging from up to 30 days detention and fines of up $1,200.

Despite the signage warning people to stay away, one YouTuber who hails from Ukraine decided to do some urban exploring and entered the Exclusion Zone alongside two of his buddies — all while streaming it live on YouTube.

Japan’s former Ukraine ambassador apologizes after YouTuber sneaks into Fukushima exclusion zone

Kreosan is a Ukrainian YouTuber who boasts over 6.6 million subscribers, specializing in unique inventions, experiments, and “sharing unconventional ideas and bringing the boldest visions to life,” as per his channel description.

He and two friends snuck into the Fukushima Exclusion Zone in September 2025, broadcasting their illegal adventures as they did so. They even camped out in an abandoned home in the area, located in Fukushima’s Okuma prefecture, showing themselves sitting in candlelight as they chatted with their viewers.

The group was arrested on Friday, September 27, after concerned citizens called in with tips for authorities.

“Police officers discovered the suspects following information provided by a citizen and arrested them in the act,” a spokesperson told local news outlets.

The situation went viral on social media, even getting the attention of the former Ukrainian ambassador to Japan, Sergiy Korsunsky, who offered a public apology on behalf of the YouTuber.

“This should not be happening,” he wrote on X.

Kreosan is just the latest foreign influencer to get caught sneaking into the exclusion zone, and one of several foreign content creators being blasted online for breaking the law while traveling in Japan.

In 2023, Twitch streamer and breakdancer ‘JOEYKAOTYK’ set off with a friend to explore Fukushima, showing themselves shattering the window of a closed inn in Fukushima’s Okuma Town. The two were later arrested on suspicion of breaking into a building.
