Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is expanding his work in marine science with the commissioning of a $300 million research vessel through his organization, Inkfish.
The ship, named RV6000, will serve as the flagship of Newell’s ocean exploration fleet when it launches in 2028.
Measuring 100 meters in length, the yacht is designed to support around 70 scientists and crew for extended expeditions. The vessel will feature laboratories, workshops, offices, and a mission control center equipped with video walls to oversee deep-ocean operations.
Advanced technology for ocean exploration
The ship is being built in Romania and will be outfitted in Norway before its delivery in the second quarter of 2028. It will use hybrid propulsion, DP-2 station-keeping with Voith propulsors, and anti-roll technology to maintain stability in rough seas.
RV6000 is designed to reach depths of up to 6,000 meters using a remotely operated vehicle. It will also support two-man submersibles for further exploration.
The vessel will join Inkfish’s existing research ships, RV Dagon and RV Hydra, expanding Newell’s investment in deep-sea science and exploration. The Valve CEO purchased Inkfish back in 2022 and has been helping it grow in the years since.
