When a League of Legends fighting game was first announced all the way back in 2019, Vi seemed like an incredibly obvious shoo-in for the roster. However, her release also came with the first real update on 2XKO’s release date we’ve had in a long time.

2XKO’s lengthy development cycle from Project L to what it is today has been a pain point for many fighting game fans. It’s taken nearly a decade to get this title over the finish line, and its full launch roster was projected to be only 10 fighters by the devs. Compared to League of Legends‘ 171 character roster, it’s a bit scant.

Now that Vi’s reveal brings that roster count up to 8, they’ve changed plans and are going for a different approach: They’re just releasing the game as soon as possible.

Finally, people will get longer than a weekend with 2XKO in 2025, although there are some serious caveats. It’s releasing on September 9th! Sort of.

A closed beta was announced for 2XKO that’ll be starting September 9. This isn’t a beta weekend, it will precursor the full launch of the game with no server uptime restrictions outside of the occasional maintenance.

So, yes, while the game isn’t officially releasing in 1.0, this is the first time it’ll be available via public release for an extended period of time. Riot plans to keep the servers up in perpetuity from here on out.

However, this closed beta will be open only to those who receive invites. The full Alpha Lab 1 and 2 invite lists will be included as well as some additional players, but access to the game will be restricted. Additionally, it’ll be PC only at the start, with consoles being added at a later date.

Along with that beta date, we also got the full reveal for Vi.

She’s a fast, rushdown-type character that takes after Terry Bogard pretty heavily in how she moves. Anyone who’s played him in this year’s Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be able to pretty easily draw some comparisons, although Vi’s a lot faster than he is.

While it’s still possible that the 1.0 version of 2XKO will have 10 characters, this beta version will be the first build that’s public for any extended period of time, and it’ll only have 8 characters on offer. With it being a tag fighter, that means this early period will have you seeing a lot of the same champions over and over.

Regardless, people who have been anxiously awaiting 2XKO’s release will surely be happy to play it after years of waiting. If they’re able to get into the closed beta, that is.
