Minecraft may be a simple blocky adventure where the scariest part is falling into a cave unprotected or turning around to meet a creeper about to blow, but there’s something (or someone) much scarier… the King in Yellow.
It’s pretty safe to say that Minecraft is relatively kid-friendly. Its zombies, skeletons, and other monsters are certainly creepy (especially the Creaking), but it’s hardly a horror game. Well, that is until YouTuber Wifies got a hold of it, introducing the world to one of the most terrifying villains in the game’s lore, the King in Yellow.
However, if you’re not in the loop, then this King in Yellow can sound a little odd. It’s not a new mod coming in the next update, nor is it someone you’ll accidentally come across on your adventures, but it’s already going viral in the community. Here’s all you need to know.
Who is the King in Yellow?
The King in Yellow is a villain created in a Minecraft ARG called Searching For A World That Doesn’t Exist by YouTuber Wifies.
In this story, the King in Yellow is a sort of Cthulhu-esque creature, in that it’s a deadly god-like entity that hunts players who enter his domain, killing, stalking, and causing anyone who reads his work or meets him to go mad.
Just like most eldritch horrors, the King in Yellow is never addressed by a specific name, nor does he speak. The only information we have on him is in books and through comments by the ARG’s main character, D3rLord3.
As for the real Minecraft game, you don’t need to worry. He’s unlikely to pop up on your adventures and lives solely in the ARG, with many Lovecraft and Robert W. Chambers fans adoring the story for its eldritch design rather than its similarity with the video game.
