If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok lately, you’ve likely come across a few videos talking about either getting into ‘Group 7’ or being left out of it. But what is this special group, and why is it such a big deal?
Well, it all started with singer-songwriter and former American Idol contestant Sophia James, who experimented with a way to make her latest track go viral.
Battling the algorithm is difficult for any creator. To get her work out there, she came up with a unique strategy by making seven different videos, each using her new song, ‘So Unfair.’
She then organized her viewers into ‘groups’ based on which of the videos they saw first on their feed. Number seven was the last one to go out, and it happened to be the most viral of the lot.
“This is just a little science experiment to see what kind of video gets the most reach out of the seven,” she explained in the clip. “I don’t know what that says about you, but you’re in Group 7. Welcome!”
Singer’s Group 7 TikTok video sparks hilarious viral ‘club’
Six days after being posted, James’ video has racked up over 53 million views, partly due to viewers humorously boasting about getting into ‘Group 7’ like it’s an exclusive achievement.
“Group 7 the baddest, we don’t make the rules,” Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty commented.
“Can you imagine not being in Group 7,” another wrote.
“I knew deep in my soul that one day I would be a Group 7 girlie,” another joked.
Others posted TikTok videos humorously telling those who weren’t in the group to “keep scrolling,” channeling their inner Mean Girl as part of the joke.
Even dancer Ezra Sosa quizzed his friends and fellow castmates at an event as to whether or not they were in Group 7, getting frustrated when they answered with the viral ‘6,7’ meme instead.
So, there you have it — you’re either in Group 7 or you’re not. No worries, though, since there’s always a new trend cropping up on the app.
