A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a small and self-contained George R.R. Martin adaptation, that plays out between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.

The series focuses on a Hedge Knight called Ser Duncan the Tall and his efforts to compete in a deadly tournament, as well as his blossoming friendship with a young squire called Egg.

What happened in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 1?

Episode 1 kicked off with Duncan mourning the death of his late mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree, then burying him, taking his sword and shield, promising to take care of his horses, then clearing out his own bowels.

Duncan travels to Ashford to compete in an upcoming tournament, and while journeying there, meets a young orphan who wants to be his squire. Dunk turns him down, and rides away.

At Ashford, he meets the Master of the Games, who doubts his knightly credentials, and tells Dunk that another knight must vouch for him. But his one hope – Ser Manfred Dondarrion – refuses to do the vouching.

Dunk attends a puppet show that features a fire-breathing dragon, and parties hard with the eccentric Ser Lyonel Baratheon.

He then heads to his bed beneath a tree, where Egg is waiting. Dunk agrees to make the youngster his squire, and the pair of them glimpse a shooting star that the knights sleeping inside don’t. Meaning the luck is with them alone…
